EV Recovery: Safe Help When Your Charge Runs Out

A low battery warning is not always an emergency. A vehicle that will not select drive, has suffered tyre damage, or displays an electrical fault is different. Effective EV recovery starts by identifying the problem, keeping the vehicle safe and arranging transport that follows the manufacturer’s requirements.

Electric vehicles bring a different set of recovery considerations to petrol and diesel cars. They are often heavier, use high-voltage systems and may have specific instructions for towing, lifting, transport mode and charging. The priority is not simply getting the vehicle off the road. It is getting it moved without creating further damage or compromising safety.

When an EV needs recovery

An EV may require recovery for the same everyday reasons as any other vehicle: a puncture, collision, mechanical issue, warning light or a flat 12-volt battery. The difference is how the vehicle should be assessed and moved afterwards.

Low charge is one of the most common calls. If the battery state of charge is genuinely too low to reach a suitable charger, a recovery operator can arrange onward transport to a charging location, home, garage or other safe destination. However, a dashboard range estimate is only an estimate. Cold weather, motorway speeds, hills, traffic and a heavily loaded vehicle can reduce the usable range more quickly than expected.

Some faults need more caution. A warning relating to the high-voltage battery, charging system, drivetrain or thermal management should not be ignored. If the vehicle has been involved in an accident, particularly one affecting the underside or battery area, it should be treated as a specialist recovery job. Damage is not always visible from outside the vehicle.

What to do at the roadside

First, make the scene safe. Move the vehicle to a safe place only if it remains driveable and doing so does not increase risk. Switch on the hazard warning lights, keep passengers away from moving traffic and follow motorway safety guidance if you are on a smart motorway or hard shoulder.

Do not attempt to push an EV across a live carriageway. Do not work beneath the vehicle, interfere with orange high-voltage cables or try to access damaged battery components. If there is smoke, unusual heat, hissing, strong odours or visible damage beneath the vehicle, move people away and contact the emergency services.

When arranging assistance, give the recovery provider clear details. The make, model, registration, exact location, fault message, battery charge level and whether the vehicle is driveable all matter. It is also useful to state whether the car is in a car park, underground bay, narrow lane, motorway refuge area or at a charging point. Access restrictions can influence the right recovery vehicle and equipment.

If the vehicle has been in a collision, explain where it was struck and whether there is any damage near the floorpan. This allows the recovery team to prepare for secure loading, isolation considerations and appropriate storage where needed.

Why EV recovery needs the right equipment

Many EVs should not be conventionally towed with their driven wheels on the road. Depending on the model, doing so can damage the motors, transmission components or regenerative braking system. Some vehicles have a dedicated tow mode, while others require all wheels to be lifted or carried on a flatbed. The correct method depends on the manufacturer’s guidance and the vehicle’s condition.

A flatbed or specialist transport vehicle gives greater control during loading and transport. It is particularly valuable where the EV cannot select neutral, the wheels are locked, suspension is damaged or the vehicle has low ground clearance. Recovery staff may need skates, wheel dollies or winching equipment to load the car without dragging it or damaging bodywork, wheels and undertrays.

Weight matters too. Battery packs make many electric cars considerably heavier than comparable combustion-engine vehicles. The recovery vehicle must have suitable capacity, and load placement must be carefully managed. This is especially relevant for larger electric SUVs, executive saloons and high-performance prestige EVs.

For a valuable vehicle, careful handling is not an optional extra. Correct securing points, controlled winching and suitable transport equipment reduce the risk of damage during a situation that is already stressful.

The 12-volt battery issue

A fully charged traction battery does not guarantee that an EV will start or unlock normally. Like other modern vehicles, most EVs rely on a separate 12-volt battery to power control systems, central locking and contactors that connect the high-voltage battery.

A weak 12-volt battery can leave an EV apparently unresponsive. In some cases, a suitable jump-start or replacement can resolve the issue. In others, the vehicle may still require diagnostic support or transport to a garage. It depends on the model, the underlying fault and whether the vehicle can be safely made ready for movement.

Accident recovery and battery safety

After an accident, an electric vehicle may need a more controlled recovery process than a straightforward roadside collection. The main concern is potential battery damage, even when the car appears largely intact. Impact to the vehicle floor, severe wheel or suspension damage, fluid leaks, warning messages or deployment of airbags can all affect the handling plan.

The vehicle may need to be isolated, loaded without driving it and moved to secure storage while an insurer, assessor, repairer or manufacturer-approved workshop considers the next steps. It should not be left in a location where it could obstruct traffic or create an unnecessary risk.

A professional recovery provider will assess the visible condition, follow safe loading procedures and ensure the destination is appropriate. There is no single rule for every collision. A light cosmetic scrape is not the same as a heavy impact to the underside, and the recovery response should reflect that difference.

Choosing an EV recovery provider

Speed matters when you are stranded, but capability matters just as much. Before arranging recovery, establish whether the provider can transport electric vehicles, including those that are immobilised or accident-damaged. A low-cost tow arranged without the right equipment can become expensive if it causes further mechanical or cosmetic damage.

For planned transport, ask how the vehicle will be loaded, secured and protected in transit. Owners of prestige EVs, dealerships and collectors may also need timed collection, delivery coordination, secure holding or transport across the UK and Europe. The best option depends on the vehicle’s value, condition, destination and urgency.

Preventing a low-charge recovery call

Most low-charge incidents can be avoided with a small margin of planning. Rather than relying on the displayed arrival range, account for weather, route speed, charger availability and the possibility that a planned charging point is occupied or out of service.

Keep the charging cable and any required adapters in the vehicle, particularly when travelling beyond your usual routes. If your EV allows it, plan charging stops through the vehicle’s navigation system so battery conditioning can prepare the pack for rapid charging. In winter, expect less range and charge earlier than you might in mild weather.

It is also worth checking the tyre condition, 12-volt battery health and recovery instructions in the owner’s handbook. You do not need to become a technician, but knowing whether your vehicle has a tow mode or specified recovery points can save valuable time when help is needed.
