A prestige vehicle can be damaged before it has travelled a single mile. Low splitters, wide arches, carbon fibre trims, performance tyres and complex drivetrains all demand more than a standard recovery approach. The best practices for prestige car loading start with a controlled assessment, suitable equipment and a loading plan matched to the vehicle in front of you.

For an owner, dealership, insurer or garage, the priority is simple: the car must leave the collection point in the same condition in which it was handed over. That means no rushed loading, no guesswork around clearance and no assumption that every prestige vehicle can be treated like an ordinary roadside recovery.

Start with the right information

The loading process should begin before the transport vehicle arrives. Knowing the make, model, registration, condition and destination allows the operator to prepare correctly. A high-performance saloon, a supercar, a classic vehicle and a luxury SUV can all require different loading methods.

Ground clearance is one of the first details to confirm. Front splitters, side skirts and long overhangs are particularly vulnerable on ramps and changes in gradient. The vehicle's drive type also matters. Electric vehicles, four-wheel-drive models, cars with air suspension and vehicles with transmission or wheel damage may need specialist handling to prevent further mechanical damage.

If the car has been involved in an accident, establish whether it rolls freely, whether the steering is intact and whether there are fluids leaking. These details affect the equipment, crew approach and whether the vehicle can be driven, winched or moved using skates. Clear information helps avoid delays at the roadside and prevents unsuitable loading decisions.

Inspect and record the vehicle condition

Before loading, a visual condition check protects both the customer and the transport provider. This is not about creating unnecessary delay. It is about identifying existing marks, damaged wheels, loose body panels, tyre damage and any issue that could affect safe movement.

Photographs should be taken where appropriate, particularly for accident recovery, dealer movements and high-value collections. The operator should also check practical points: are the keys available, is the vehicle in park, is the handbrake released where safe to do so, and can the suspension be raised? On vehicles with adjustable ride height, selecting the appropriate setting before loading can make a significant difference to clearance.

The collection area matters just as much as the car. A steep driveway, loose gravel, a busy carriageway or a tight underground car park may rule out a straightforward ramp approach. A professional operator assesses the space before committing to the movement.

Use equipment suited to prestige car loading

The right vehicle and loading equipment reduce risk at every stage. Low-angle ramps, extended ramp sections and carefully positioned ramp aids help reduce the breakover angle that can catch a splitter or exhaust system. A standard tilt-and-slide bed may be suitable for many vehicles, but the setup must still be adapted to the car's clearance and wheelbase.

Winching is often the safest option where a vehicle cannot be driven onto the bed or where its condition is uncertain. The winch line should be connected to an approved recovery point or suitable wheel-lift attachment, not improvised around suspension parts, steering components or bodywork. Protective sleeves and controlled line tension help avoid contact damage.

For non-running, accident-damaged or locked vehicles, wheel skates, dollies and specialist moving equipment may be required. This is particularly relevant for electric vehicles and four-wheel-drive cars, where dragging or incorrectly moving the vehicle can cause expensive drivetrain damage.

A suitable setup normally includes:

  • Low-angle ramps or ramp extensions for reduced clearance risk.
  • Rated winching equipment with appropriate attachment points.
  • Soft straps or wheel restraints designed to avoid wheel and body damage.
  • Wheel skates or dollies for vehicles that cannot roll freely.

Equipment alone does not guarantee a safe load. It must be used by someone who understands the vehicle's limitations and can stop the operation if the approach is not right.

Control the approach, not just the speed

Slow loading is not necessarily careful loading. Controlled loading is. The vehicle should be aligned squarely with the ramps and moved at a steady pace, with an operator watching clearance points from outside where necessary. A driver cannot always see the underside of a low vehicle, especially when the car transitions from the road onto the ramp.

The key risk points are the front bumper as it meets the ramp, the centre of the vehicle as it passes over the change in angle, and the rear bumper as it reaches the bed. If clearance looks marginal, the correct response is to alter the ramp setup, not to force the vehicle forward.

Driving a prestige car onto the bed can be appropriate when it is mechanically sound and the site allows for it. In other situations, winching provides more control and keeps the operator out of a vulnerable position. It depends on the vehicle, its condition and the loading environment. There is no single method that suits every collection.

Secure the vehicle without stressing it

Once on the transport bed, the vehicle needs to be restrained using approved methods that hold it securely without placing unnecessary load on vulnerable components. Wheel straps are often the preferred solution because they secure the tyres and wheels rather than loading the suspension or chassis in the wrong place.

Restraints should be checked for correct positioning, tension and clearance from bodywork. Straps must not rub against painted surfaces, brake lines, carbon fibre panels or low trim. The steering should be secured as required, the parking brake applied where appropriate, and loose items removed or safely contained.

Prestige vehicles may have specialist wheel finishes, large brake packages or unusual tyre profiles. These details should influence the restraint choice. A strap that is technically secure but likely to mark a wheel is not acceptable for a high-value transport job.

Before departure, the operator should walk around the loaded vehicle and check the entire setup. This includes ramp stowage, restraint tension, winch line removal, bed locks and any loose debris. The car should then be checked again after the first part of the journey, particularly when travelling over uneven roads or carrying a vehicle with damaged suspension.

Plan for urgent recovery without cutting corners

Breakdowns and accidents create pressure. A customer may be stranded on a motorway, outside a dealership or at home late at night. Fast response matters, but urgency does not remove the need for a safe loading plan.

At a roadside incident, scene safety comes first. The recovery operator must consider traffic flow, visibility, road surface and the condition of the vehicle before beginning the load. A damaged prestige car may have deployed airbags, compromised wheels, leaking fluids or suspension that has collapsed. In these cases, forcing it onto a bed can worsen the damage.

Communication is part of careful handling. Customers should know what will happen to their vehicle, whether it can be taken directly to a repairer or dealer, and whether secure storage is needed while the next step is arranged. This reassurance is especially valuable after an accident, when the owner may be dealing with insurers, repairs and an unfamiliar location.

The handover matters as much as collection

A professional transport job finishes with a proper delivery check. At the destination, the unloading area should be assessed with the same care as the collection point. Tight access, steep gradients and poor lighting can create the same clearance risks in reverse.

The vehicle should be unloaded steadily, inspected with the recipient where practical, and handed over with any relevant condition notes. If the car is being placed into short-term secure storage, its location, keys and collection instructions should be recorded clearly.
